A good habit is a behavior that is beneficial to one's physical or mental health, often linked to a high level of discipline and self-control. A bad habit is, well, the opposite. Jerry and Shari propose that both good and bad habits are a result of a lifestyle that naturally determines life’s longevity. The 12 habits (the way you live your life) for a happy, healthy and prosperous marriage and lifestyle are pursuing both quantity and quality. The bottom line for our readers isn’t to be like Shari and Jerry but to be yourself in light of what will make you happy, healthy and prosperous over your remaining years here and hereafter. We want to be your enablers not your role models. Habits, the way we live, emerge without our permission.
Habits are restive and delicate to change. To change the way you respond, you must keep the old cue and deliver the old reward but insert a new routine. That’s the rule: if you use the same cue and provide the same reward you can shift or replace the routine and change the way you live. Almost any behavior can be transformed if the cue and reward stay the same. Research has found that habits can change your DNA ... believe it or not your daily habits can turn genes on or off. So inheritance is not the only way genes affect aging ... bad habits can cause chronic aging and diseases while good habits can avoid or reverse chronic aging.
I met Shari in 1953 when I was in Junior High School and finally dated her in 1957 four years later. We got married in 1959 my Junior year in college. We've been married for 60 years in November 27, 2019. I'm a former CPA and licensed Administrator of nursing homes who graduated from Simpson College with honores and was the Wall Street Journal's best business graduate of 1961. A recognized expert in Medicare and Medicaid regulations, I've published 9 books on health care. I've published professional journals, magazine articles, given speeches throughout the U.S. and performed national seminars for trade conventions over a period of 37 years. More recently , I purchased, operated and then sold three nurisng homes with Shari and our son Kiip. Kip and I developed our restorative and rehabilitative care managgement software that has been implemented in 141 skilled nurssing care facilities throughout the country.
My inspiration has always been self-help authors and spokesmen for goal setting and positive reinforcement for forming our lifestyle habits. My cues, routines and reward have been geared to my desire to have a happy family, prosperous business and healthy lifestyel. I call this self-health. By being in my late seventies, not taking any medications or experiencing any chronic illness I'm still able to play tennis and work out. For fun our vacations have been princapally with our family to our time share in Cabo Mexico.
Jerry says he spotted me in Junior High School and I didn't notice him until he was a Senior in High School. Wrong, I always knew he was the one, as did my mother. Now, after all these years we are continuously asked "we want what you've got and tell us the your secret to being married that many years". i answer that we are compatible in interests, family, work and play. It's what Jerry is calling our Fountain of Youth lifestyle. In my work life I'm a cosmologist by profession. I was the decor designer for our three nursing homes and the acting Administrator for our Washington Iowa nursing home. I was a stay at home mother for 16 years of our married life raising our four children. I'm now the proud grandmother of 12 grand children and 2 great grandchildren. Over the years I have been an artisit, played tennis, participated in book clubs, yoga and palates classes and now a coauthor with Jerry my husband of 60 years.
I've also been a working partner with Jerry in our health care businesses for 25 years. Then part owner with Jerry and our son Kip of three nursing homes. After raising a family this has been the most gratifying experience of my life. We were able to bring hope and happiness to our patients in a home like environment with a culture of restoring and rehabilitating them back to thier highest level of functioning using our 12 habits for living longer-stronger lives after a chronic illness(s). This was the philosophy that Jerry brought to the nursing home business that in 25 years of consulting and ownership resulted in 141 skilled nursing homes discharging 43,500 more patients back home than they would have otherwise.

Not since Juan Ponce de Leon searched for the literal Fountain of water, that supposedly restores the youth of anyone who drinks or bathes in it and couldn’t find it, others have claimed to have it in a pill or supplement or plastic surgery. So, why do we still chase the fictional Fountain of Youth when, according to researchers, you have your own that you may have turned off with harmful habits.
Like the scene in “Harry Met Sally” Shari and I often have people come up to us and say, “I want what you have … what’s your secret … you look way too young to have been married 58 years looking as good as you both do.” Tongue in cheek I always answer it’s “Sex, Kids and Rock-N-Roll.” But in essence, we have defied the conventional aging wisdom … which is to retire at 55, 60 or 65 and start the dying process. Also, the skeptics question our obvious longevity … “oh sure, you’re lucky to have the genes you inherited from your parents”. Well, just wait a minute …
Dr. Peirce J. Howard, in his landmark book puts the brain neurons and synapses into the gene equation. In “The Owner’s Manual for the Brain” he finds that habits can change your DNA. Believe it or not your daily habits can turn genes on or off. A new genetic therapy can in fact turn our harmful habits off and turn our Fountain of Youth habits back on. Dr. Howard also found that if we have altered our DNA genes by thinking and acting younger we will live longer. Like everyone else we are the product of or the victim of our lifestyle habits. If so, Shari and I are, in effect, caretaking our own God Given Fountain of Youth
According to Dr. Bendesen’s book “The End of Alzheimer’s” a genetic ReCODE of APO4 gene, using a multi discipline approach (exercise, diet and supplements), prevents or reverses cognitive decline and may well end Alzheimer’s. He states that 21st century medicine should be treating the cause of harmful habits not the source of the habit. The cause being harmful habits and the solution being youthful habits.
Dr. Roizen states in his book “Real Age” that more than 70% of aging can be linked to behavior and other environmental factors leaving 30% related to genetic influences. Those can also be changed using prevention techniques and health altering medications and surgeries (breast removal, Alzheimer’s treatment, heart disease medication and surgery, etc.). Just turn on your biological clock and change your real age score!
And please don’t think we have an unfair advantage because of luck or circumstances. It’s the fact we’ve been married 58 years and covet each other. If you’ve been in a long-term relationship, you know that some romantic relationships, family members, and “friends” can reduce your life expectancy just as easily as they can extend it! The real trick is making the most of what you have and figuring out what’s right for you. You only need to change what’s turning your Fountain off.
